Policies for the Glass Studio

GLASS STUDIO ASSESSMENT

Before reserving or using Glass Studio equipment independently, all members must pass a two-part assessment to ensure they can safely use our equipment and understand the Studio policies. The two-part assessment includes both an online and in-person component.

SAFETY AND PROTOCOL

Safety Rules:

  • Closed-toe shoes must be worn at all times in the studio.
  • Approved eye protection must be worn by anyone in the glass studio.
  • Use a table broom to clear all surfaces of glass pieces – do not use your hands.
  • Do not touch the glass kiln unless specifically asked to do so by the Glass Studio Technician.
  • Due to the possibility of small cuts while working with glass, please be extra cautious if you are currently taking blood thinners.

Glass Studio Protocol:

  • You must be a member of the Innovation Hub and pass the glass studio assessment to work independently in the glass studio or have glass projects fired in the kiln.
  • You must reserve your workstation and check in at the front desk before working in the glass studio.
  • Do not touch glass or glass projects that do not belong to you.
  • No pets allowed in the glass studio at any time.
  • You may not work in the glass studio if you are impaired by drugs or alcohol.
  • Members must only use the machines covered in the glass studio assessment.
  • Broken or damaged tools or machines should be reported to the Glass Studio Technician or Front Desk staff immediately.
  • We ONLY use 90 COE glass in the glass studio. Outside glass projects being fired at the Hub must be clearly identified as 90 COE unless otherwise approved by the Glass Studio Technician.
  • The Innovation Hub does not sell glass or raw materials. Members must purchase and bring their own glass and raw materials to be used in the studio.
  • The glass and raw materials located in the glass studio are for classes and workshops ONLY.
  • Allow at least 10 minutes at the end of your project for cleanup.

DISPOSAL

It is dangerous to leave glass particles on work surfaces or dispose of glass particles in the trash can improperly. Use a table broom to sweep unwanted glass particles into a designated hard, plastic container – either your own or the Hub’s.

STORAGE

Members may not store personal materials or works in progress in the glass studio unless currently enrolled in a class that requires you to do so.

Any materials or projects left unattended without permission from the Glass Studio Technician run the risk of being thrown away or repurposed.

Any project or materials left out overnight or for an extended period must be approved in advance by the Studio Technician. Failure to do so could result in the suspension of glass studio privileges.

GLASS FIRING PROCESS

Members may leave work ready to be fired on the blue trays in the designated "Ready to Fire” area for the Glass Studio Technician. To fire glass at the Hub:

There must be availability in the “Ready to Fire” area before leaving your work. Please check if there is shelf availability.

Members can use up to 2 of the blue trays provided at one time in preparation of the next firing.

Fill out the Glass Firing Request Form completely, place the form on the blue tray, and arrange your glass project on top in the space provided.

When placing work on the Glass Firing Request Form, please allow ¼” space for every 2 layers of glass between projects to allow for spreading during firing.

Next, use the QR code on the Glass Firing Request Form to alert our Glass Studio Technician that your work is ready to be fired. A form and QR code scan are required for each tray you leave for firing (*Limit of 2 trays*).

Then put your blue tray with completed request form and glass project(s) in the "Ready to Fire” area.

Glass will be fired within 2-3 weeks, unless otherwise noted via signage and/or email.

An email will be sent once all work on a tray is complete. Pick up all work within 30 days of notification from the shelves labeled “Ready for Pick-Up."

GLASS FIRING POLICIES

Due to shifting while loading and unloading the kiln and the risk of projects melting into another member’s project, any work that is not properly glued in place will not be fired.

Only members can have glasswork fired at the Hub.

Any work that is larger than the allotted space on the Glass Firing Request Form cannot be left in the studio without prior permission from the Glass Studio Technician.

Work must be placed on the Glass Firing Request Form with your full name and date, or it will not be fired.

Glass will be fired at “full fuse” until further notice or otherwise arranged with the Glass Studio Technician.

*Failure to adhere to studio policies or code of conduct could result in verbal warning, written warning, suspension of studio privileges or loss of membership.*
